Nortel energy calculator remorse
By Bo Gowan, May 08, 2008, 07:25 AM EDT

The word on Nortel's energy efficiency advantages for enterprise networks is getting out there, but not soon enough for some.  On his Lower (Carbon) Footprint blog, Tom Raftery has this post about his Cisco buyer's remorse.  Tom is a co-founder and director of Cork Internet eXchange - a hyper energy-efficient data center in Ireland.

In the blog post, Tom says that one area where they "chose poorly" was with their Cisco switches - as he points to Nortel's energy efficiency figures and says that "the independently verified results are astounding."  Sorry we didn't get the word out sooner Tom, but kudos for focusing your data center on energy efficiency and reaping the financial and ecological gains it can bring.

Luckily, others are getting the facts in time.  Last week from Interop, Nortel's Tony Rybczynski reported on his blog that an educational institution put a "stop order" on a $2 million Cisco equipment purchase after seeing Nortel's lower energy and TCO figures.

And as this message spreads (here, here, and here), the counter-claims from Cisco have begun as well.  No doubt this topic isn't going away anytime soon.

Great news and links, its simply a matter of time that companies begin to realize that Nortel is for "real" - the tide is turning; I can see the glory days in the not so distant future...keep up the good work guys. However I do agree that more needs to be done on the PR front.

Best, SS

Thanks for the mention and the link guys.

I think what Nortel needs is a full-time Green ambassador. Someone to be selling this message all day everyday.

I went to YouTube, for instance to look up Nortel's TelePresence offering. There is only one Nortel video there and it is only ok.

Cisco have dozens of high quality videos about their telepresence product.

Go kick their ****! And, if you need any help, I'm in the market at the minute!!!
