Your comments make the news
By Bo Gowan, Nov 12, 2008, 10:42 AM EST

This morning while reading through the press clippings for Nortel, I ran across a new story in the Globe & Mail where Simon Avery focuses on the departure of Nortel CTO John Roese.

I found two things particularly interesting in the article.  In the absence of an interview, Simon instead turned to John's comments on his blog, and specifically from his final blog post at Nortel.  Second, Simon included commentary and quotes from you, the blog readers and commenters, and highlighted the "mixed" reaction so far.

I've known for a while that Nortel's blogs have a broad and diverse readership -- including customers, employees, stockholders, media and analysts.  Blogs are frequently seen as a source for breaking news, rumors, and to get a pulse on sentiment -- but I have noticed that there generally seems to be an increasing acceptance of reader input and reaction as part of news coverage.

This has two benefits: it makes your voices more likely to be heard by the masses, and it makes it all the more important that companies like Nortel engage with readers in the active dialogue.

Interesting opinion Bo. I'm amazed at the number of "experts" that comment on other's blogs in the same industry. As you say, it lends credibility to the feedback portion of the blogging lifecycle. However, there is a lot of "noise" mixed in with that signal as well. It's important to filter appropriately. On another note, I missed Nortel at VoiceCon SF. There was a lot of buzz about them not being there.

Hey Alex - we actually haven't had a booth at the VoiceCon SF event for a few years now from what I'm told by our events guys (though apparently we did have 4 session speakers this year). We do attend the annual VoiceCon Spring event in Orlando though, as its one of the biggest UC events of the year IMO.

Bo - I agree that Nortel should engage with readers in active dialogue. I am a devoted fan of Nortel and have been for many years. I have over 10 years of experience working with VARs and have extensive experience with Cisco, Avaya and Nortel. I even have some experience on the carrier side although it is limited. In all of the time I have survived as a VAR (believe me, it is as hard as making it in Hollywood), I am still loyal to the bone to Nortel in 3 key areas: customer premise equipment, carrier-grade equipment and data equipment. I read that article you mentioned. Nortel is on the right track in my opinion. Timing is the biggest issue here. If Nortel's cut backs can weather the next two years, the newly launched and soon-to-be launched products will show what a star Nortel (still) is.
