Nortel technology behind largest fixed WiMAX deployment in India
By Miranda MacDonald, Nov 25, 2008, 08:16 AM EST

Before I get into the details about the WiMAX news, I wanted to take a second to introduce myself.

My name is Miranda MacDonald and I've been doing Media Relations here at Nortel for almost two years. Bo has trusted me with Buzzboard for the week while he enjoys Thanksgiving with his family. I'm Canadian and we've already had our Thanksgiving so I'll be here posting on Buzzboard and trying to suppress my envy for those of you on holiday this week. So coming to you live from the chilly north is a new voice from Nortel to talk about some of our news this week.

About a month ago, Bo pointed out an article on GigaOM that highlighted a report on the global WiMAX market. The study, conducted by TeleGeography Research, said that the number of commercial WiMAX networks worldwide jumped 82% in the last year - from 69 to 126 and that WiMAX was gaining ground in many areas outside the US, particularly India.

Well, it looks like this study was bang-on and the number of global WiMAX deployments has grown a little bit today with the announcement that Nortel is teaming with India's Chhattisgarh State Government to deploy a new, high-bandwidth State Wide Area Network (SWAN). The network, which is a mix of both wireless and wireline access, will be one of the largest fixed WiMAX deployments in the country for e-government, providing access to 3,000 locations in the state.

As part of India's National e-Governance Plan, the network will be used in Common Services Centres (CSCs) throughout the state to allow people easy access to services such as applying for birth certificates, land use records, business certification or tracking the status of applications online.

Another interesting use for this network is intra and inter-department connectivity. This increased connectivity can really boost State Government efficiency. For example, Regional Transport Offices (RTO) will be connected across the State and connected to the Police department. Now, if a vehicle is used in a crime, police can instantly access the details of the owner of the vehicle within the RTO which can really speed up the time it takes to find the offender. Talk about Hyperconnectivity!

The TeleGeography Report is one of many recent articles that estimate India will experience exponential growth in WiMAX users. This recent article from The Hindu Business Line states that WiMAX will be a $13 billion market in India by 2012. As well, this article from The Economic Times says that all the leading players in the WiMAX sector are looking at India as one of the bases for WiMAX software development and as a home for their manufacturing facilities in the near future.

Miranda,

Welcome on board!

All the positive comments here on Buzzboard and then this from Francois Lancon (Reuters on Tuesday): "Nortel is seeing firms in Asia becoming more cautious as they consider deals, with the global slowdown putting budgets under pressure, a senior executive said. Demand from India was fairly good and Japan was steady but, he added: 'China gets me worried sometimes on the enterprise side'"

It seems to me that you don't exercise the necessary control of your information flow to the press. This kind of stupid negative comments are the last thing Nortel needs in this situation (in my humble opinion) - unless you want to run the company totally down (although it's hard to imagine the stock price going much lower).

Honestly, I'm amazed how poorly you as a company are managing this crisis situation - you must exercise total control with all external information flow. It's one of the first and most basic rules of crisis management!

Best Regards Torben

No one knows about this wimax news because there has not been an offical press release in canada or us via any disclosure wire. No has picked up on the news. You need to do much better on the PR front.

Miranda,

Glad to see you joining the Buzzboard. I am going to disagree with Torben's response. How would it look to outsiders if Nortel were to put a muzzle on its own employees? Your company is doing the right thing by allowing free speech, and I doubt it would enhance your credibility to have your outward-facing employees lie about the current challenges that are affecting every global organization...

Best regards, Graham

Hi ZA,

The PR team is hard at work and the WiMAX press release that went live on our site this morning will be going out over the wires.

In fact, last month we issued 28 press releases but it isn't just volume of press releases that is going to make a difference. We'll need to show a continuous push, which is exactly what we plan to do.

I agree with Torben on the Lancon....really, we know the World is experiencing weakness....at $0.39 AND all of the negative press from analysts...we really don't need comments like that being made. he should focus on selling equipment.

Graham,

Sorry to say but this is not a normal situation...it's a crisis situation where the major part of the investment community believes that Nortel is on the verge of bankruptcy. In such situations, one small negative announcement can easily outweigh 10 big positive announcements...it's a matter of psychology, perception and interpretation! Therefore crisis situations call for absolute control of news flow...and I personally think this announcement from Lancon was unnecessary and far from smart given the circumstances. Was it really a "need to know" for investors? ...NO! Tough situations call for tough measures!

Best Regards Torben
