See what Avaya has to say about the status of the deal and the value it places on Nortel's people, technology and customer base by watching this short video clip. You'll hear Mohamad Ali, Avaya's Senior Vice President of Corporate Development talk about the acquisition, why Avaya was willing to "go the distance" during the auction and how the Nortel and Avaya teams are working extensively to ensure that the new organization will be operational from day one.

In the last installment of the series on the dimensions of communications the topic was sensory interfaces, focusing on visual and dimmers environments. In this installment we move up to the tools level, focusing on informational tools.
Informational tools are used to augment the basics of sensory communications to convey more information. When the first caveman picked up a piece of charcoal and drew a mammoth on the wall of the cave and showed how a group could attack it and bring it down he was using a communications tool. The phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the value of information tools in the communications process.

The first major deployment of web.alive rolled out at CES as the Lenovo Lounge. The immersive virtual environment and 3D audio provided by web.alive is a simple way to create an environment that enables people to interact in a new and profoundly differnt way. Lenovo is using it to provide an interactive environment where customers can interact with specialist to understand the value of specific Lenovo models and to reduce the loss of customer opportunities due to the complexity of the PC buying process. An interesting post from virtual world blogger Dennis Shiao can be found at Lenovo's eLounge Virtual World. As a keen observer of the space, he quickly recognized the unique values that Nortel has brought to the space; ease of use, simple interactions and powerful capabilities.

Today the London 2012 Olympic Games announced Nortel as the Official Infrastructure Supplier for the summer games. This is an exciting event in many ways. As you may be aware, Nortel is supplying the infrastructure for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, so this will be the second Olympics in a row that has chosen Nortel's advanced solutions as a complete package for communications. The London Olympics will be much larger and will really begin to demonstrate how Hyperconnectivity will change the way we ll share in the event. The London Olympics are billed as "Towards a One Planet Olympics". Obviously communications is critical in bringing all of us together and the Green sustainability of the Nortel solutions is critical in the decisions to create an Olympics built around how we all share the planet and live together.

I was in an office recently that had a 42" wall mounted plasma screen installed. I have always thought that this was an extravagance that more related to the occupant than business, however my recent experience has convinced me this is not the case. Over the course of a couple of days, a number of meetings were held that I participated in. In almost every one the screen was used to present information used by the group. This included presentations as well as using the web browser to quickly find information needed during the discussion. The set-up included a dock station that could go to either the desktop monitor or this screen. Connected to the dock was a wireless keyboard and mouse so the PC could be controlled from a table or the desk.

Sorry for the lapse in posting....I went to Hawaii with my wonderful wife to celebrate our 3th wedding anniversary and totally forgot to get the posts up........I hope that is a good excuse!!!! I saw this recent article in Popular Mechanics about "bionic contacts". The thing I find interesting about this concept is the need for continuous communications to the wearer. While I have advocated the concept of caching as a mechanism to reduce the amount of real time traffic (for video for example), this will actually define an environment where continuous communications could be incredibly valuable and change many things.

I was intrigued by the announcement of a Creative Technology Video Conferencing System called InPerson recently. The announcement of this system was of interest on two levels, first that it is essentially a small video player with a camera and the necessary internals to do video conferencing, and second that some \ continue to mis-understand the value of video in a business setting. While most video systems are going upscale in terms of size and bandwidth to more directly equal the face-to-face experience, this is a move down below the PC. While it is larger than the Nortel video phones, it still lacks the size and capability to meet the needs of the "selling" part of the Video Blog 2 from last year (Video Blog 1 was about how humans communicate). I believe the next big market in video is in the fringes (selling and Grandma) of the charts. In the selling arena it becomes a logical extension of Facebook and YouTube into the combined real-time introductory domain and then extended to seeing those you have relationships with. This had a lot of interest in Japan, but never took off in the west. Perhaps now with iPhones and equivalents it will take off. However, it is not a business service and will not garner $1,000 plus as the device cost.
